Why accessible websites?
An accessible website is able to reach out to more users, reducing the barriers that make it difficult for people with any kind of limitation or disability to access the information contained.
At Blue Line, we believe in the potential of accessible websites not only from a social responsibility perspective but also from our Client's perspective.
Greater accessibility is inherent to better levels of usability with users able to more easily reach what they are looking for and interacting more easily with the website, regardless of the device (mobile phone, desktop or tablet) or browser used (Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge).
According to the INE – the Portuguese Statistics Institute, 40.5% of people aged between 15 and 64 faced some kind of limitation or disability in 2011. In 2016, an estimated 27 659 people were visually impaired while 26 860 experience auditive impairment.
Compounding this dimension is the 9% of people in Portugal experiencing various different visual limitations. And 5.5% of the population report difficulties with memory and concentration. The importance of this point lies in the fact that the Internet is often the first contact between your institution and the user or visitor in question. Indeed, according to a PORYEAR study, 66.8% of the Portuguese population regularly uses the Internet.
Running an accessible website means you comply with the norms defined by WCAG 2.0 and that you meet that stipulated in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which defines the right of these people to "access, on an equal basis with others (...), to information and communication, including information and communication technologies and systems" Your institution or company will thus be guaranteeing the best practices of social responsibility for your publics and will surely be correspondingly rewarded.
An accessible website ensures autonomy to those who lack this outside of the virtual world, establishing a loyal relationship with your institution that results in greater customer retention.
A more accessible page thus generates more hits, a greater number of pages read and more time spent on the website by users. And, more traffic contributes to improved search engine positioning, which then attracts even more users and customers to your website.
By enabling equal opportunity through website interactions, you also contribute to a fairer and more equal world.
